I’m explaining this for new users since I got questions lately: The difference between Houdini FX and Houdini Indie?

FX includes farm nodes. Unless you’re planning to run a render farm, you probably don’t need it.

— Indie comes with two render nodes, which is enough for your home rig!

Both versions give you full access to all Mantra, Karma and the tools, including the HDK.

However, if you choose the FX version, it prevents you from using Indie HDAs.

Lastly, when you share a .hip file people will know you’re not paying $3195/year license fee!!

(FX project files are saved as .hip, while Indie project files are saved as .hiplc. Indie can open FX files without any issues. However, if you open a .hiplc file
in FX, Houdini will run in Indie mode. If you modify and save the project, it will remain a .hiplc file.)

– You don’t need keygen/crack etc.
– You don’t need ‘sesinetd’ license server.
– You don’t need ‘hkey’ license administrator.
– You can have and run multiple versions of Houdini INDIE

IMPORTANT: If it’s your first time using Houdini 21.0 make sure you create the folders below before running it.

“C:\Users\YourUser\Documents\houdini21.0”
and
“C:\Users\YourUser\Documents\houdini21.0\otls” – if you want to use HDA files.

Download and install into packages > SideFXLabs for 21.0.440 (optional but highly recommended)
