In this course, prof Hugo Guerra will cover Nuke Studio, the latest addition to the Nuke family from The Foundry. Nuke Studio is the combination of the most powerful compositing toolset in the Industry, Nuke, with one of the most robust conforms tool in the market today, Hiero. Nuke Studio has been designed to give you a full suite of tools for composting, shot management, conform, review and finishing for visual effects productions, enabling very collaborative workflows.
Course members will learn all the features of Nuke Studio’s powerful Timeline Environment from a production point of view. You will learn conforming from EDLs and
XMLs, learn to manage and organise a full production, deal with versions of shots and timelines, learn to use timeline “soft effects”, jump back and forward from the
Compositing and Timeline environments, handle the typical issues involving “real world” problems and be presented with “real production driven” solutions to handle
fast paced VFX pipelines. Hugo will also show some of the production pipelines, tricks and tips he created and implemented on one of the busiest commercial pipelines
in the world, The Mill London.
Hugo Guerra is a award winning Director, Visual Effects Supervisor and teacher working in the industry since 1999. He’s most recently been a Lead Artist, Creative
Director and VFX Supervisor for some of the most renowned companies in London including, The Mill, Nexus Productions, JellyFish Pictures, Atomic Arts. (among many
others). During his time at The Mill he has led and managed large projects such as Audi ‘Hummingbird’, IKEA ‘Gnomes’, BBC BBC Digital Radio D-Love campaign, Cif
‘Sleeping Beauty’, Adidas Battle-pack, Nike Zlatan among many other, including the acclaimed Call of Duty ‘Ghosts’ in-game cinematics. These days Hugo runs his own
company VFX Vault, Ltd where he splits his time working as a VFX Supervisor, VFX Consultant, VFX Artist and Lecturer speaking at various events all over the world on
behalf of The Foundry. He is a member of the VES Society and has been one of the the foremost figure of NUKE and HIERO, in the London VFX scene.
course syllabus
Class 1: Nuke Studio, the ultimate pipeline and Visual Effects Suite. In this 1st class we will talk about what is Nuke Studio and how it can help you in the
challenges of every day Visual Effects. We will go over what we will achieve in the classes and learn where Nuke Studio sits in a typical pipeline. We will also talk
about the Hardware requirements to make a commercial client friendly Nuke Studio Suite using SSD Cache drives and a monitor broadcast output for reviewing and develop
a client “friendly” suite.
Class 2: Nuke Studio’s interface, tools and workspaces. In our second class we will go over Nuke Studio’s new toolset and interface specifically the brand new Timeline
Environment and Compositing Environment. We will go over all the different workspaces from Conforming, Editing, Compositing to Finishing and Exporting. We will also
spend some time looking at the new Viewer options, scopes and playback options.
Class 3: Ingesting footage and editorial tasks. In this class we will start by bringing footage into Nuke Studio using EDLs, XMLs, manual import, clip replace and lean
how to organise your Bins and folders and finally how to sync the offline to the timeline.
Class 4: Shot management, conform and Pipelines. In this class we finish our conform, by organising, tagging and labelling all of our plates for the different VFX
shots in the timeline, we will prep our edit for the exporting to the Compositing Environment and talk about job structures and folder pipelines using real production
examples.
Class 5: Soft Effects. In this class we will show the different uses of the powerful “soft effects” in the timeline and we will talk about when should you use these
effects and when to use the Compositing environment in different situations, from client sessions to pure compositing sessions.
Class 6: Compositing Environment pipelines. In this class we will go over how to use the Make Comp function in the timeline. We will go over the Make Comp, the Make
Comp Special workflows to take the most out of the Compositing Environment. We will also go over how to use Nuke’s Studio powerful build in “Mini Farm”.
Class 7: Compositing Environment pipelines part 02 In this class we continue to go deeper into the Compositing Environment. We will go over comps using “ Soft effects”
and “make comps” working together. We will go over how to customise the “Make Comp” pipeline. We will also look at how to update you timeline and how to import Nuke
Scripts “outside” the normal pipeline.
Class 8: Tags, custom Tags, Text Nodes, Titles workflow, Transitions, Wips and Caching. In this class we go over the Tagging system, make custom Tags with custom
Icons. We will also talk about how to use the Text Soft Effect to create slate information and we will talk about a possible workflow to use titles and logos in Nuke
Studio even do there is no Alpha channel support in the timeline yet. We will finish talking about how to use transitions between shots using the “Make Comp” Pipeline.
Class 9: Tips and Tricks from production. (including problems) In this class I will share many tips and tricks from my experience on building an entire pipeline of
Nuke and Hiero when I was the Head of The Nuke Department at The Mill London.
Class 10: Production Case Study (Leonard in Slow Motion Case Study) In this class we will show a real production as a case study using Nuke Studio from the Onset
Supervision to the finishing and delivering a Project. We will go over the conform, compositing and delivering the project. BONUS Class: FTrack and Nuke Studio In this
class we will go over how to use FTrack inside Nuke Studio.
